Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
