The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Condemn an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.

The sentencing of pro-democracy activist and British citizen Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Advocacy bodies and several nations have described the legal verdicts influenced by political considerations.

International Outcry and Calls for Release

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the two-decade sentence amounts to a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She characterized the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute designed to silence those who speak out against China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and release him to his family.

“This verdict illustrates how the imprecise and extensive clauses of Hong Kong’s national security legislation are subject to interpretation in breach of universal rights standards,” remarked top UN human rights official Volker Türk.

A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deeply regrets” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and called for his immediate and unconditional release.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered activist publication, was detained following the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities after widespread unrest backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was found guilty on counts of conspiracy to produce seditious material and colluding with overseas entities. The second set of accusations were based on the controversial security law.

A Son’s Anguish

The activist's child, Sebastien, expressed that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. His international counsel labeled him the “globally most notable political prisoner” in custody today.

Sebastien Lai commented that while the sentence was expected, its announcement felt worse than imagined, even as it offered some “respite” that the court process had concluded.

Political Repercussions

The sentencing has cast a shadow over diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with China's leader Xi Jinping in January. Yet, the extent of progress towards his release is uncertain.

Sebastien Lai asked the value of a visa-free travel agreement while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “a bit tone deaf.”
