Catherine's Traditional Christmas Musical Celebration Spotlights Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The focus of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Performance and Potential

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Sisterly Duo

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
